Cosmo is finally back with me in Brooklyn after the summer in Colorado with my parents. He recently underwent back surgery in Denver. The surgery went well and his recovery has been amazing. I'm glad to finally have the little stinker back with me in NY.

It has been a while since I've taken my camera out at home. Yesterday as Cosmo slept on the couch I saw the perfect opportunity to take out the camera.

Today I am thinking of my sister, who is in Israel. So, here is a picture from Israel that I took in 2002. This little girl lived at the absorption center where my sister was volunteering. In the courtyard all the children bombarded me and were fascinated with the camera. This little girl caught my eye. She was so curious but stayed outside the group of children surrounding me. She patiently waited while I let the group of kids touch the camera and trigger my flash. When I came over to her and motioned that I wanted to take her picture she was delighted. We didn't speak the same language so I couldn't ask her to pose. Clearly, she just knew what to do.

When my family and I arrived at the top of Machu Picchu I was delighted to see a dog at the entrance gate. I had seen lots of dogs in Peru but never did I expect one to be at the top. I'm usually the first to notice a dog or cat and take out my camera. However, my parents and sister know my love for photographing animals. Without a beat I always hear someone point out the animal, "look Shaina, a dog" (and my usual response is rolling my eyes at my sister and saying "I know, I already saw it"). There are so many pictures from Peru that I still have not posted. I will work on posting some here in the next few weeks.

I had the pleasure of photographing Stoli O for the 2010 LHS calendar. Shortly after the photo shoot she passed away from terminal cancer. Meeting her back in August you would never know she didn't have much longer to live. I feel very fortunate to have met and photographed her. She was a joy in the studio as she was in the lives she touched.

You will not notice big changes but a lot of small changes. The major change is the photo gallery and how images are viewed. There is less moving the mouse around and clicking, now you can just place your cursor on the arrow and click through. The images are also significantly larger. Be sure to check out the new "contact" page with a high flying dog. Also check out the "cats" gallery which was updated yesterday with new images.
There will be more updates coming in the next few weeks including updates of all the dog galleries and travel gallery.

Today I am editing through last years sessions to update my website. I came across this image. This session was for the Liberty Humane Society calendar. The owner brought her two young children to the shoot. They desperately wanted to help keep Matt still. I snapped this when the whole situation became humorous. The cat didn't want to be there from the start. The kids were bored with the shoot after 5 minutes. But in the end I did get a few nice ones of Matt and he was included in the 2010 Liberty Tails Calendar. All proceeds from the sale of the calendar go directly to helping dogs and cats at LHS. Guilty! It really bothers me when photographer's can't edit... when you see multiple images from one shoot on their website... when they really should have just chosen one, the best one. I try really hard to not to do this. However, this is my blog and I can let it slide. So, I'm going to be guilty of not editing down to just one best image of Jinjy at the water fountain. My sister found Jinjy wandering around the kibbutz she lived on in Israel. She took him in just over a year ago. He is thought to be a vizsla. I love Jinjy. He is silly, sweet, beautiful and likes to sit on me and wake me when I am sleeping. More pictures of Jinjy in the next few days.

There are still many pictures I'd like to post for my trip to Peru but before I do that I will post some images from my tip to Israel last week.

If you have ever traveled to Israel then you know there are cats everywhere. One day I traveled to Jerusalem with my sister. We spent some time in the Old City, it is beautiful and amazing but there are never any cats! So, I took my sister to this one particular area of Jerusalem that I love to visit because I can always find cats. I don't know the name of the neighborhood and couldn't explain how to get there. All I know is that across the street from the shuk (market) where I buy the most delicious Rugelach. A lot of people hate the cats in Israel and see them as pests but to me they are just wonderful, so many photo ops!
